It’d be trite to say that My Name is My Name , Push T’s debut solo album, is the record that Kanye West’s Yeezus should have been, but it’s definitely a record that Yeezus isn’t.
While Kanye isn’t known for his modesty, the production on Pusha T’s legacy-affirming record is anything but showy. Yes, the MPC drum claps, piano and soul sample triple attack which is Kanye’s signature is present, but it’s squarely in the tradition of Pusha’s work with CLIPSE. If anything it’s a mark of respect that Kanye has chosen to duplicate the percussive arrhythmia that best suits Pusha’s flow, rather than give in to the next level prog-hop grandstanding that marked Yeezus.
It’s proof that Kanye can make a statement even when being understated. Maybe those leather jogging bottoms weren’t so bad after all.
